Have you ever met someone that was surprised to find out your were an atheist? I’ve met people that were surprised and as a result never spoke to me again. Thirty years after having met them they find out I’m an atheist and they run for the hills. Nothing changed about me but they suddenly couldn’t handle their new found knowledge.
I’ve also had the opposite. I’ve met people that were pleasantly surprised and even a bit confused because me being an atheist was not what they thought atheists were like. This is my favorite experience. I like knowing that part of their brain is forced to realize that perhaps they misjudged atheists.
Does this convert them or have them suddenly embrace their atheist neighbors? LOL no. Not likely. But every little bit helps. My goal for this next year is to leave people a little better off than I found them and making them see atheists are not what they expected.
